Is Amazon FBA dead? No. But it has changed. Here’s what to do next
“Is Amazon FBA dead?”
Is what I type into the Google Keyword Planner Tool, a free app that tells you what people are searching for on Google.
As a quick side note, here is a link to this tool: https://ads.google.com/intl/en_ca/home/tools/keyword-planner/. I love this thing. I recommend using it if you’re making blog or YouTube content to promote your products online. This way, you can see what folks are already searching for, then make content to fill that need. Pop in a few of your product’s keywords, find suggestions, and publish regularly!
Anyway…
I just went to this tool.
And I type in:
“is Amazon FBA dead?”
And it shows me other, related things people are searching:
“Amazon FBA is dead”
“Is Amazon FBA dead 2020”
“Is Amazon FBA dead 2021”
Lol.
I’ll tell you what: I’ve been in this space since 2015.
And people have been asking if Amazon FBA is dead every year since 2015.
At least!
But what’s the answer today?
Is this year somehow different?
In some ways, yes.
Because:
– Amazon FBA the “get rich quick scheme” is dead
– Amazon FBA the “rank for keywords overnight” is dead
– Amazon FBA the “make money with no work required” is dead
Here’s the old Amazon FBA playbook circa 2015:
– source a made-in-China product with mass appeal (e.g. home, sports, kitchen, etc.)
– buy Amazon reviews, do a launch, and supplement with Amazon PPC to rank for keywords. There weren’t as many products online, so ranking was easier
– collect cash
Here’s the new Amazon FBA playbook circa 2023:
– source a product that speaks strongly to a specific, niche demographic (e.g. rock climbing gear, industrial and scientific, pet funerals, copper wiring)
– do NOT buy Amazon reviews (my note on that here), use Amazon PPC to rank for longtail keywords, then more general ones later on. Grow keyword ranking over time. Use Buyer-Seller Messaging to get reviews.
– reinvest cashflow into more inventory; build up to full-time income within 3-4 years. In this interview I did with David Schomer & Ken Wilson (both 7 figure sellers) David notes he reinvested into his biz for 4 years before quitting his full time job as a CPA!
What I’m saying is:
Amazon FBA is not dead.
It’s just become a business, like any other.
It’s earned a spot on the roster of “new age, digital business models” along with things like social media marketing, Shopify dropshipping, AirBnB, Kindle writing, etc. It’s a tried-and-true model that works well IF you work at it.
The punchline?
ALL of these models work.
It’s just a matter of finding the right information to help you run it.
And I have that information and can share it with you if you’d like.
