You might be thinking:

These are REAL brand names I see on pages 1 & 2 when I search “stainless steel water bottle” on Amazon. Now, look…

You and I both know:

These brands are probably based in China.

Manufacturers now sell directly to US consumers.

And they’re really hard to compete with because they have great profit margins. They’re the source. Maybe this is happening to you, too.

So how on earth are you going to compete?

Is the party over?

Should we all just go home?

Quite the opposite. In a sea of “NORGREZes” and “GOPPUSes” competing for the lowest price, sellers simply need to:

Tell a better story.

Love. War. Revenge. Parenting. Leadership…

Stories make people take action.

Here are 2 brands that use stories to make millions of dollars:

> MudWTR (~$60m/year in revenue).

It’s a coffee substitute made of mushrooms (not the trippy kind).

The way they sell “mud” is not with features or benefits. Let alone price. You can check out their ad here, if you’d like.

It’s a story:

“I bought into the lie that coffee was going to help me do more” –> “But my life was stressful; I had a bad relationship with caffeine” –> “I switched to masala chai” –> “I made MUDWTR” –> “want to try it?”

People who believe the same thing as MudWTR believes will buy from them.

No matter how cheap other coffee substitutes are.

Next:

> Hubspot (~$1b/year in revenue). They sell software. But the principle applies.

The story they tell is:

“Things like TV ads and direct mail are dying because of the internet” –> “inbound marketing is the new way, which involves building relationships with people using free content” –>

“you should keep your inbound marketing efforts organized” –> “we made Hubspot to do this” –> “want to try it?”

Did you notice something?

Whether it’s chai tea or software…

It’s the same story!

It’s something like:

(1) Hey, I realized something wrong in the world (something people know deep down, but maybe haven’t articulated)

(2) Here’s why it’s bad

(3) The solution is this

(4) I made one such solution. Would you like to try it?

You can tell a story with your Amazon store…

…with listing photos, listing videos, Sponsored Brand Video, your storefront, your Buyer-Seller Messaging, your packaging, etc.

You will build a loyal customer base of people with shared beliefs.

They will buy ONLY from you.

And you can charge a premium (i.e. be very profitable).

And make all the money you want.
