Amazon PPC algorithm hack: Amazon’s love affair with old campaigns
It happened so slowly that I barely realized, but…
…my life is run by algorithms.
– what I watch on YouTube is based on YouTube’s algo, which prioritizes CTR and watch-time. Hence what ideas I’m thinking about.
– the products I buy are based on Amazon’s A9 algo, which prioritizes sales velocity. Including things like protein powder! So I literally went from algo –> purchase –> physical consumption. The algo is affecting my body
I was even looking at Google Maps today. I realized that some businesses buy preferential placements on the map, which makes me more likely to go there.
Yikes!
In conclusion: I’m moving to the forest. To live a solitary life amongst the birds.
This will be my last email.
… Kidding. We’ve got work to do! And people to help! Rumble young man, rumble.
But the point is:
In the 2020s, our lives are a LOT more algorithmically generated. Remember Facebook’s chronological timelines in 2008? That’s an antique by today’s standards.
Algorithms (or, a set of digital instructions that a computer uses to make a decision) are more powerful than ever.
We can fight them. Or pretend they don’t exist. But in my estimation, that’s willful ignorance and may not be of benefit to us. It’s probably better to accept that they’re everywhere and learn to play with them. To almost “talk” to them. Today, I want to talk about 1 algo in particular that may be of financial benefit to you:
The Amazon PPC algorithm.
Here’s a little quirk of that algorithm that folks don’t discuss.
The Amazon PPC algorithm LOVES old campaigns.
Maybe you’ve noticed: when you launch a brand spankin’ new Amazon PPC campaign, it’s like a small sapling tree. It won’t get as much “sun” (impressions) as your tried-and-true, long-standing campaigns from the past. Your old campaigns are your massive 100-year-old oak trees. They stand tall, soak up the sun, and cast a shadow.
2 action items:
– avoid pausing old campaigns that are serving, as this will disrupt sales. Better to repurpose/modify what already exists
– if you want more sales, try putting keywords into existing campaigns before launching new ones
Got some campaigns that could use a little love?
We’re now doing free audits of Amazon PPC accounts.
We’ll identify:
– how much money is being drained on terms that don’t make you money
– what campaign types to do more of (we made 1 free suggestion that made a nice lady an extra $2k/mo earlier this month)
– how to structure your campaign architecture in a way that Amazon’s ad algo will love
