Don’t spend another DOLLAR on Amazon Ads until you hear this
Too many Amazon sellers lose money on this mistake.
I feel obligated to address it.
If I can help you increase your profit by even 100 bucks month it’ll be worth it. That’s a really nice dinner for 2 or, heck… burgers and fries for 6! Let me get to the point:
There’s a HUGE lie in the Amazon FBA space:
“Throw ad spend at it and the problem will disappear.”
Or:
“Maybe your store isn’t profitable NOW, but if you spend enough on ads, one day you’ll get lots of keyword ranking and THEN you’ll be profitable.”
But:
Too often, that day never comes.
Competitors may have venture capital cash to burn.
Keyword ranking doesn’t guarantee organic sales.
And sellers end up going broke trying to “rank”.
Here’s what I suggest instead:
For new SKUs (or new businesses), don’t worry about scaling ad spend… at least initially.
The goal is NOT to spend $1000 per day in ad spend off the bat.
The initial goal should be:
Create a profitable unit case.
By which I mean:
Run a small amount of ad spend (e.g. $25/day for a new SKU, for example), sell some product, and generate an actual profit on it. From day 1! This is your profitable “unit case”. Your proof of concept.
Then, do it again with a bit more spend (e.g. $30/day).
Make a profit.
Then, a bit more spend.
Make a profit.
And just keep rolling that snowball.
It’s all centered in a place of profit, not revenue.
Too many sellers are trying to scale their ads before they’re ready.
This doesn’t make sense because:
More ad spend won’t:
– fix product quality –
fix the listing
– fix a low review count (directly, at least)
– fix the CTR or conversion rate
– etc.
More ad spend only gets you MORE of how the product’s currently doing.
And if it’s not performing profitably yet, you don’t want more gas on that fire!
Until you know that you can make money advertising a SKU, don’t feed that thing!
It’s like…
If you’re a new parent and you’re having difficulty sleeping with 1 newborn at home, don’t go out and adopt 4 other babies! That’s not the move right now.
The mainstream FBA advice says:
Scale, THEN profit tomorrow.
I’m advocating for:
Profit today, THEN scale.
Will it be slower? Yes.
But does it have longevity? Yes.
Will you sleep better at night? Yes (newborn or not!).
The best Amazon sellers are in the profit business, not the revenue business.
The world has it wrong.
