Want to rank for keywords on Amazon? Here’s how in 1 sentence
“Let me save you from buying that $5000 Amazon FBA course by summarizing it in 1 sentence”
^ I once saw a tweet like this.
While I don’t recall the exact wording, here’s basically what it said:
“Real money on Amazon comes from keyword ranking. To achieve keyword ranking, make more sales than comparable products for your desired keywords over a long enough period of time.”
And, heck…
That’s a good 1-sentence summary of Amazon success.
Breaking it down into 4 pieces:
“real money on Amazon” =
The sales that come from organic ranking (Amazon’s own algorithm featuring you on page 1 for keywords) are the most profitable type of sale you can make on Amazon. Sales that come from PPC advertising can be profitable, but the ad spend will always cut into your margins. Organic ones are more profitable per unit. For example, the top organic result for “vitamin c” makes ~$544,000 USD per month in revenue. At 25% margins that’s $136k in monthly profit. Just from occupying that organic real estate! Amazon PPC ads should be used to increase ranking. That’s one of their primary purposes.
“make more sales than comparable products” =
Many times a day, for each individual keyword, Amazon’s ranking algorithm looks at your products versus your competitor’s products. It says: “hmm, who’s selling the most for this keyword?”. If you’ve sold an average of 10 units per day for the keyword in the last 14 days, whereas your competitor has sold an average of 20 units in the last 14, your competitor will rank better than you (and therefore enjoy more organic sales). There are other factors, too (e.g. return rates, NCX, account health, whether you use FBA, etc.) but very broadly, Amazon’s algorithm is based on units sold for a keyword in the last couple weeks.
“for your desired keywords” =
When it comes to keyword ranking, it’s quality over quantity. It’s like throwing darts with precision versus tossing a handful of darts at a board all at once. Every product has 10-15 ideal keywords that are high-volume (>1000 monthly searches), but also highly specific to the product. They perfectly describe the product. Think of your own SKUs; maybe a few of these keywords come to mind for you. Shoppers would search these keywords, find your thing, say “yes, exactly what I’m looking for!” and buy. By running Amazon PPC for these 10-15 keywords, including them in your listing, and making sales for them, you will build organic keyword ranking over months and years.
“over a long enough period of time” =
There’s a Janet Jackson song called “What Have You Done for Me Lately”. Amazon’s ranking algo must be a Janet fan. Amazon seems to prioritize the last 2 weeks when it comes to keyword ranking. If you made 100s of sales for a keyword just this past week, Amazon cares a lot. You’re a star, baby! Whereas if you made 100s of sales for a keyword 3 months ago, Amazon cares less.
