Amazon Keyword Ranking Tips from 7 Figure Seller Mike Wishko
Mike Wishko risked it all to become an Amazon seller.
It’s March 2020.
COVID hits.
Mike quits his cushy accounting job to sell on Amazon.
He dives right into product research.
He’s got $0 coming in, so this 1st product has to work.
And at first, it doesn’t. It was slow for months.
Did he throw it all away for nothing?
His journey:
March 2020: product research
April: manufacturing and shipping by air (if you want speed, go by air)
May 26, 2020: first sale
June: $2k in sales
July: $6k in sales
August: $38k (and a stock out!)
It’s a 6 month rollercoaster.
He’s learned a lot these past 3 years. And has joined the 7-figure club.
I want to share one of his most important learnings with you today. If Mike’s story can save you some time and money, we’d both love that. It’s an insight about Amazon keywords.
Here’s what Mike says:
“They overassume what search volume is needed to blow up. If you’re on page 1 for a couple of keywords that are like 2000-5000 [in monthly search volume], you can make an absolute killing just with a couple keywords. You don’t need these huge keywords but you DO need to be on page 1.“
2 main take-aways from this:
(1) when first launching, don’t try to take down the largest keywords in your niche. Keyword research tools may indicate they’ve got 50,000 searches per month, but that also means intense competition. Gunning for the top spot right away is like never going to the gym before but insisting that you benchpress 400+ pounds right away. 10-15 keywords with 2-5k in monthly searches each is fine, and it’s achievable. I like this advice because it shrinks down what otherwise looks like a big, hairy, unapproachable problem
(2) studies show that 70% of sales are made on page 1, so Mike’s right about page 1 ranking being a priority. The keywords that you’re targeting MUST be battles that get won
