The “Print on Demand” + FBM Business Model = good way to cashflow on Amazon?
Welcome to this exploration of the Print on Demand on FBM business model.
Moms from 1962
Here’s a money-making concept for your next Amazon SKU.
Who doesn’t want more money, right?
Now…
It sounds far-fetched as I write this, but these things are all literally true. This Amazon business model:
– requires “no money down” on inventory. At most, a small one-time equipment expense
– allows you to list many SKUs and see what works (instead of betting on unproven inventory)
– lets you micro-target. Imagine selling an Amazon product only to American moms born in 1962! I’m talking about the combination of “print on demand” + Amazon FBM.
But first:
Here’s your typical Amazon FBA horror story:
Sell 1 relatively undifferentiated product, buy $3k in inventory, list it, it doesn’t sell. You’re stuck with the bill.
And now, a Print on Demand + FBM (potential) success story:
List 10 different products, buy zero inventory, and have the item made ONLY ONCE an order comes in, ship by FBM. Profit from day 1, no money down on inventory. You can switch to FBA over time with your most proven, popular SKUs.
I know this works because I’ve worked with sellers doing 7+ figures a year with this same model.
Is this model perfect? Heck no.
Here’s just a few downsides I can think of off the top:
3 Bad Things
– FBM means you’ll always be fulfilling orders (but never fulfilled *sigh*)
– there could be printing errors resulting in customer returns
– because it’s FBM, say goodbye to negative seller feedback strikes. It’s all on you
Personally…
I have no dog in this fight (private label FBA vs. print-on-demand FBM). Both can work great. If FBA is already serving you well, stick to it.
Just wanted to bring you this additional option in case you hadn’t heard of it and think it might be a good fit. It’s a great “bootstrapping” Amazon business model if cash is scarce.
And if you’re just trying to get SKUs online, it’s great for that.
Do you want your Amazon store to be an untouchable force of nature?
